What’s so great about working?
Well let’s start off with the idea of working. It seems that the idea of “work” is demonized on a regular basis. Not on purpose, but the way we talk about work certainly adds a butter taste with regards to the topic.
The word “workaholic” itself likens the effects of someone who works too much as a negative trait. Not only that, the term itself is popularized and applied as a casual adjective, when in reality, it would do little in denoting any actual illness or disorder if there actually was one present.
And then we take a look at the word “work” itself. What does that bring to mind?
“Work” can mean a job; a place where more often than not, we’re forced to put in time and effort for a cause we don’t see fit, and for something that doesn’t align with our true interests. Fair, unfortunately, but on the other hand, it is difficult to sustain ourselves without doing something.
“Work” also often means foregoing the possibility of partaking in pleasurable acts in the present. You can’t watch TV, you can’t just relax, and you can’t enjoy the day and watch the clouds pass by. Few, and I would wager even those who do have this mindset, have the capability of truly indulging in these joys.
So we Take a Look at the Other Side
So rarely in life are we given opportunities where your effort is guaranteed to pay dividends in the future.
So let’s broaden the scope of what work means to being just about anything that you have to put focused effort in to.
Work
Anything you put applied effort in to
If I broaden the scope of what it means to work to this definition, apparently I love working. Whether it be when I’m training at the gym or in MMA, learning, being at work versus everything else, I’m often working.
Working itself is beautiful. It promotes personal development, and is the only path to growth – and as some added bonus, it often has positive affects in society.
Guaranteed Benefit
So, let’s think about that. As per the above, the fruits of “effort” or “work” are guaranteed to pay you dividends. It is such a simple model. And best of all, it’s free. Whereas you could spend money for something which will offer you minimal gains, you could invest in yourself, for free, and be GUARANTEED a positive outcome.
So… you mean, that for free, I can be guaranteed to be a better person? Again, so for “free”, I can be guaranteed to be more skilled, more knowledgeable and more personable? Not to mention having the ability to have explored the various gifts that life has to offer?
Every effort you put in means something.
And for those who would only put in effort if other people see it. Well you’re doomed, because you’re not going to adopting this mindset anyways. BUT, for arguments sake, let’s say others don’t see it; Even if they don’t see it, it will undoubtedly mean something to yourself.
At this point, you know you’ve put in the effort, and you know you’ve done your best, and you know that you put your best foot forward. Seeds of confidence, seeds of understanding, and a character of substance are the only things to come about from this.
Your success does not come at the expense of others
It’s become so economical to achieve success at the hands of others. It has also become easier to feign success and to reap benefit from those who have extended an offering. Yet this offering is not free.
You guarantee productive outcomes with positive benefit, with the least expense to others around you.
A friend Joshua Pinter said,
There’s no better cure for anxiety and stress than getting up early and getting some work done.
And the satisfaction you achieve from such endeavors, they are timeless. They outlast the minimalistic gains you achieve from eating an ice cream, or watching your favorite TV show.
I’m certainly not saying that work should be your life. You need to unravel… unwind….. breath….. relax….. wiggle your toes……., I’m just saying work is a beautiful thing. Maybe it’s not work, but dedication and purpose…
And might I say, even though I cannot guarantee that this will lead me to “success”, I’m sure that it is the only way there.
